At one time, all dragons were united as the Claws of Veeshan on the continent of Velious.  Eventually two dragons of opposing elements mated produced a prismatic dragon named Kerafym (the Sleeper/Awakened).  Kerafym wanted to overthrow the leading counsel of the Claws and started a civil war.  Jaled Dar and several other dragons followed Kerafym and were exiled when the counsel managed to capture and imprison Kerafym.  The exiles, led by Jaled Dar, moved to Kunark, built Veeshan’s Peak, and called themselves the Ring of Scale. (It is debated as to whether they were exiled or just chose to leave over ideological differences.)

Over time, the Ring of Scale began to come into contact with the Iksar empire (under the lead of Rile, son of Venril Sathir), and Trakanon (a member of the Ring of Scale) wanted to war with the Iksar and kill them all off.  Jaled Dar remained adamant that dragons should stay out of the affairs of lesser races and demanded Trakanon follow his lead and stay out of trouble.  Trakanon disobeyed and attacked Rile’s fleet, killing Rile in the process.  Trakanon was expelled from the Ring of Scale, but war between the dragons and the Iksar had already begun.

Rile’s son, Atrebe, enjoyed dabbling in the magics his grandfather toyed with and managed to create sokokars and sarnaks through the magical combinations of frogloks-dragons and iksar-dragons respectively.  When Atrebe died, his son Ganak took the throne as emperor of the Iksar.  Ganak met Jaled Dar in battle on what became known as the Field of Bone.  They killed one another, which left Phara Dar (Jaled Dar’s daughter by Harla Dar) leader of the Ring of Scale.  (Harla Dar did not join her husband and daughter in Kunark, she stayed in Velious.)  The Iksar Empire degenerated after this with no emperor, and soon the froglok, sarnak, goblins, and giants finished off the empire.  The remaining Iksar fled to Cabilis and remained there through the time of EQ1 (500 years before EQ2).

Trakanon eventually took over the Iksar city of Sebilis, enslaved the froglok population (former slaves of the iksar), and began telling prophecies of things to come.  He contracted some sort of curse, either intentionally or unintentionally and began to look very much undead (I’ll post a screenshot later).  There is still debate whether he actually was undead or not since the eq1 bard epic required you to kill him, resurrect him, and then kill him again to obtain undead dragon parts.

Five hundred years later, we find that Trakanon is leading the Ring of Scale.  There are a few theories going around about this.  He may have forcefully installed himself as leader through combat or manipulation, or Phara Dar may be his lover.  In EQ1, the ghost of Jaled Dar holds a firm grudge against Trakanon and his daughter Phara because he believes they intended for Jaled to die in the war Trakanon started.  If his belief is true, this would also explain the emergence of a new Dar in Veeshan’s Peak, Khalen Dar (the ghost dragon linked with Phara Dar who, epic quest suggests, wants to be freed. ty Smoke).  Khalen may be the offspring of Trakanon and Phara Dar who was killed some how.  There is no reference to Khalen Dar in eq1.

Trakanon has also been cured of his curse, or restored to life.  No explanation of this is given anywhere that anyone can find.

Venril Sathir had always been into necromancy and had been turned into a liche (although a not quite right one because of interference in the ritual by his son Rile) before the time of EQ1 and came to reside in Karnor’s Castle.  The last 500 years finds him returned to his Iksar capitol city of Sebilis and his descendant emperor sons (Rile, Atrebe, Ganak) are all liches as well (a quest line in KJ near City of Mist has you retrieve Rile’s phylactery).  This seems like history revision, or perhaps Venril Sathir resurrected his dynasty after eq1, because I don’t believe they had any presence in EQ1 other than lore, but I could be wrong.  The sword that Ganak used to slay Jaled Dar is secretely in the hands of the Legion of Danak (revealed when you do the Danak quest line), and they plan to use it to destroy all dragons.
